Fall and winter 2011
For anyone who has been thinking about changing to a barefoot lifestyle - this is a great time! Shoes can not only restrict circulation to your horse's hooves during this very important season, they also trap snow and make surfaces seem more slippery. So now is the perfect time to pull shoes. I will be happy to do that for you
.
There is more to going barefoot, however, than pulling shoes. On the first visit, I will pull the shoes only. I rarely do any trimming or shaping on this first visit. I will, however, recommend the timing for a trim and we will begin to make changes that will improve your horse's health.
I will need to see your horse several times to achieve an outstanding barefoot trim, but improvements will begin immediately. Your horse will have better blood flow and you will notice that as the trims are done, your horse's hooves will begin to "clean themselves" and you will find little snow cakes - hoof shaped! This is a sign that when the hoof flexes, the snow is deposited instead of getting stuck in the shoes.
If you ride in the winter, you will be pleased with the traction a barefoot hoof can achieve. A balanced barefoot can work on icey surfaces almost like a "suction cup". It is truly amazing.
Call me to discuss more about the benefits of having your horse barefoot in the winter. I will be happy to discuss it with you!
